Superchrist: Holy Shit
What is beer metal???
Take a sound that is equal parts Motorhead, The Black Spiders, The Wildhearts and The Ramones and turn it into a wealthy wallop of huge riffs, romping drums, gut busting bass and gritty, lived in vocals, and you'll be getting some way there. The songs are short, the production is sharp, the performances are strong and the little sprinkling of tongue in cheek humour welcome. Prepare to tick the boxes marked huge guitars, gargantuan choruses and damn good fun!
Amazingly Superchrist are actually 14 years old, having eight releases already to their name and quite why they've never crossed my path before, or indeed become household names, I'm not quite sure. If the other albums in their catalogue are as rompingly good fun as Holy Shit, then we have been missing out. Rampaging guitars courtesy of Hank Bitchlover (Mr and Mrs Bitchlover must be so proud...!) rule the roost through the charging "Burn Again", "Run To The Night" and "Don't Wanna Know", although the mighty smack of drums from Ian Viper really holds this three piece together, working a weird kind of hypnotic magic on every song. Whereas Chris Black is a deceptively strong vocalist (something he splits with bass duties), with his loose, rough and ready style actually being a potently controlled weapon and one that takes intentionally simple song ideas and turns them into foot on the monitor, pump your fist in the air anthems. Don't believe me? Try on "Hot Tonight", or the quaff of "Beer Metal" for proof that your body will convulse and your throat be hoarse as you writhe to the beat and holler for all your worth.
This is neither refined, nor overly crafted stuff, but that isn't the goal here. Pull out your old battered leathers, let whatever is left of your hair down, crack open a beer or ten and be prepared for the mighty, grinning, cackling onslaught!
What is beer metal??? Superchrist, that's what!
