Vaiping: Industrial Workers Of The World

Hailing from Norway, Vaiping is an industrial band with a new album Industrial Workers Of The World. The album was actually released in 2009 in their native homeland but it has taken a couple of years for the album to be released worldwide. This is the follow up to their 2007 release The Great Polar Expedition.

This is a concept album relating to factory workers the world over as is indicated by the front cover showing band members complete with factory garb and grease covered faces. I suppose you could consider this a tribute of sorts to those people who really make the world go round.

The album consists of eleven tracks with a total running time under forty minutes, quite short by today's standards. The band uses lots of industrial sounding effects and electronic beats to give the music an overall techno/industrial vibe. Guitar is a main ingredient, often used in angular and jarring rhythms that work within the context of the songs. The first two tracks are short intros filled with droning sounds, industrial effects and people chattering. "IWW" is the first fully realized tune featuring processed vocals through a megaphone, industrial beats and heavier guitar rhythms. One of my favourites is the Kraftwerk influenced "Transatlantik" that has the band dipping into electronic sounds and beats complete with lead vocals sung in German. In the catchy "Wind Will Blow" the band adds some pop flavourings into the mix and in "Victory" there is a decided Depeche Mode influence.

Overall this is not a bad album but it didn't blow me away either. That said, there is enough here to warrant further listening and I am curious to hear future releases. If industrial music is your thing and you dig bands like Depeche Mode, Massive Attack and Kraftwerk I suggest you listen to the samples and decide for yourself.
