Various Artists: Embrace the Sun

Here's a 2CD set of 'good will' from the folks at Lion Music. To quote their website; "Dedicated to the victims of the Tsunami and Earthquake that struck Japan in March 2011. All artists and composers as well the record label and publishing company are donating their profits from the material included to the victims in hope of a better world. All profits will be donated to the Japan Red Cross.". What we have here is called Embrace the Sun, a collection of songs from bands & artists from and associated with the Lion Music label, and if you like melodic progressive metal, jazz-fusion, and shred guitar, this is something worth checking into, plus it's for a great cause.

There's a ton of material here, so I won't go into all of it, but there certainly are highlights. "End of Time" is a great memorable rocker from Milan Polak, complete with his fiery fretwork, and "Mother" is a soaring progressive/power metal anthem with angelic female vocals and the stunning guitar work of Lars Eric Mattsson. Anthriel deliver some dramatic & powerful hard rock on "Circle of Life", and "Life Is Worth the Pain" is a great slice of prog-metal from the band Dreyelands. Guitar phenom Marco Sfogli delivers the goods on the fusion romp "Stand Alone", and "Falling" by Missing Tide is a great piece of 80's melodic hard rock. Infinity Overture steps up with some neo-classical shred as well as death metal and gothic female fronted power metal on "Do You Care?", and former Michael Jackson lead guitarist Jennifer Batten wows with the gorgeous instrumental "Sakura Season". Over on Disc 2 you get the super crunch of "New Beginning (Arata Na Staato)" from Overdrive, the soaring metal from Emir Hot on "Fear of the Storm", the commcercial sounds of "Survive" from Section A, the quirky fusion from prog veterans Mastermind, and the gorgeous ballad "Black Barren Lands" from progressive metal titans Tomorrow's Eve. Of course there's plenty more, but you get the picture.

Though Embrace the Sun might contain a bit too much material for those with short attention spans, if you love melodic rock, progressive metal, power metal, fusion, and shred guitar, you can't go wrong with this collection of songs put together by the folks at Lion Music and their roster of talent. Plus, the heartfelt intentions behind this release make it a winner even before you hear the strong music contained within,
