VTT: Symptoms of Sin

Hailing from the garden state of New Jersey, VTT, short for Voodoo Terror Tribe, released their debut album Symptoms of Sin in 2009. The band label themselves as alt-metal and I suppose that is as good a label as any. To my ears nu-metal would also be an apt descriptor.

The band consists of Gil PZ (vocals), Emir Erkal (guitars), Primer (bass) and T-Bone (drums). They are capable musicians and there are some decent melodies but the music did sound a bit samey after a while. That is not to say this is a bad disc but I am not sure how much I will pull this one out.

The album's first three songs are quite accessible offerings and the vocals of Gil PZ are quite strong. He has a good voice well suited for radio friendly metal and I did like his clean singing style. The next four tracks tell a much different story. The clean voice is replaced with a gruffer style, far from growling but still pretty harsh and the songs are a tad heavier. They are not bad but nothing really overwhelmed me. Heavy riffs and double bass drums is the order of the day. An exception is the adventurous "Deleted Scenes" that has the band incorporating more acoustic instrumentation into their metal sound. I also liked the keyboard intro to "Never Died Before". Here the band developed more industrial and electronic textures that I found a little more interesting than some of the other tracks. The album ends with the video version of "The Victim", a pretty decent track.

As I said earlier this is not a bad album but there are a lot of bands to choose from in the highly competitive metal market. If VTT can add a little more variety, mood and atmosphere into their compositions it would go a long way in helping them stand out from the crowd. Only time will tell…
