Reis, Michel: Point Of No Return

Born in Luxembourg, now living in New York, Michel Reis is a force to be reckoned with in the world of jazz. He is an excellent pianist and has an exceptional resume having attended the Berklee School of Music and the New England Conservatory.

On his new album Point Of No Return Reis is joined by Tal Gamlieli (bass) and Adam Cruz (drums), forming the core of the band. Helping out are Vivek Patel (flugelhorn) and Aaron Kruziki (soprano saxophone).

Reis' piano really shines on the album and is the focal point of these nine compositions. He is a fabulous player, able to create mood and ambience that only the best are able to achieve. His playing can be quite subtle creating moody atmospheres and some heartwarming melodies. That said, there is an underlying intensity here and Reis can definitely kick it up a notch when he wants to. On the title track, one of the album's best songs, the frantic pace is set quickly, before turning to a whisper only to return to that initial intensity. It's a mixture of delicate and power with a few discordant notes added to the mix. In contrast, "Folk Song" has a wistful melody and a more introspective approach. Reis' piano flutters away like leaves on the wind, leaving the listener immersed in the music. Another highlight is the engaging "Street of Memories" where the piano creates such a head sticking melody you will want to hit the repeat button again and again.

On "Its Only Been A Dream" Patel's flugelhorn adds a layer of texture as Reis' piano ebbs and swirls about the soundscape in a cascade of sound. It is a moody piece with sublime musicianship by all involved.

The album ends on a more somber note with "The Sad Clown", a calming ballad with a haunting atmosphere; well-crafted and perfectly composed. A fine ending to what is a very good jazz album.

Point Of No Return is another strong contender for best jazz album of the year. Check out the samples and hear it for yourself or better yet, just buy the record. Either way you get to hear some great music.
