Taborn, Craig: Avenging Angel

Craig Taborn is an American pianist who has been far more prolific as a sideman than as a solo composer. He has four albums to his credit, the last being Junk Magic, released in 2004. The man is a talented pianist and a perfect fit for ECM Records.

Taborn has worked with many musicians and it is no wonder after listening to his latest album Avenging Angel. There is no denying the man's talent and his latest album is a feast for the ears for anyone who appreciates solo piano music.

The album contains thirteen original compositions showcasing Taborn's delicate finesse and powerful intensity. His keyboard is a canvas upon which he paints expansive sonic soundscapes of delicate passages and jarring dynamism, all with the precision of a surgical scalpel. Yes, his playing is that good.

While Taborn's playing is quite beautiful, the melodies do not jump out and a little effort may be required for some listeners but the reward will be that much more satisfying. This album does verge on the avant-garde but there is beauty here, slowly revealing itself after many listens. It is up to you, the listener, to peel back the layers and immerse yourself in Taborn's dynamic world of sound.

This is an album of contrasts, whether it is the improvisational approach taken on such stand out tracks as "Spirit Hard Knock" and the intense "Neither-Nor", where his playing takes on a wild abandonment or the pretty "Forgetful", demonstrating Taborn's fluid sense of melody is not lost.

Solo piano music has rarely sounded this good proving Taborn is one of the best jazz pianists on the planet. Avenging Angel can be found on ECM Records.
