War Horses! is the latest compilation to come from the U.K's premiere heritage label Angel Air Records. A nice primer for the newbie, this collection is not only a good way to find out what Angel Air are all about, but it's also a great vehicle to hear some of the deeper album cuts from some of rock's more obscure artists as well.
For the past fourteen years Angel Air has been assembling an impressive catalogue by providing a sanctuary for veteran artists, whose music might have otherwise been forgotten. Serious rock fans will of course recognize the names of Gillan, Heavy Metal Kids, Krokus (yes that Krokus), David Byron and Stray on this compilation, but it's the lesser known acts that tend to steal most of the limelight here. Take for example the straight ahead classic rock crunch of "Bleed Me Dry" by Nobody's Business, a band that featured ex-Procul Harum member Bobby Harrison on vocals and original Foghat bassist Tony Stevens, or "Candice Larene" by Fandango, led by ex-Deep Purple member Nick Simper. Other highlights include legendary Stone The Crows vocalist Maggie Bell, thought of by many to be the British equivalent of Janis Joplin, turning in a smoking rendition of Free's "Wishing Well", a super charged run through of Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well" by ex- Gillan bassist John McCoy's band and "My Life's In Your Hands" by post Mott outfit British Lions.
Constructed in pretty much the same fashion as their recent compilations Do You Dream? and Ventis Secundis, Tene Cursum, which tackled both U.K. pop / psychedelia and progressive rock respectively, War Horses! - Angel Air Rocks! will give you a taste of some of the 'harder' flavored acts on their roster. You also get plenty of bang for your buck because this one clocks in at around seventy five minutes.
