Plenty brutal & extreme, Withered's latest Prosthetic release Dualitas once again sees this US band combine black, death, and doom metal with hardcore for a sound that is truly pulverizing and somewhat unique. Opener "Extinguished With The Weary" lets their black metal influences come at you full force, not afraid to hammer your senses with blazing guitar riffs, violent raspy vocals, and crushing drum blasts, but they just as quickly turn around and slow things to a doomy pace on the massive "Residue in the Void", one hell of an atmospheric & dark dirge that midway turns into a frightening death metal march. Much of this back and forth goes on throughout the album, as you get rampaging tracks such as "Seek the Shrouded" mixed in with the more atmospheric black metal styled "From Shadows". Gotta also love the epic black metal-meets-post rock of "Aethereal Breath", easily one of the most adventurous tracks here.
It's all good, all brutal, and all unrelenting from start to finish. Withered have done a nice job of varying things up here, giving some of the veteran Scandinavian bands on the black & death metal scene a run for their money for sure.
