Various Artists: Whom the Moon a Nightsong Sings

This is a compilation that I was looking forward to. Whom the Moon a Nightsong Sings also happens to be a conceptual album based around nature themes. What had me very interested in this double CD release, was the fact those songs were mostly acoustic musical compositions. Now, I'd bet you people saw that coming and instantly recognized the acoustic guitar fanatic that I am!

What makes this double set even more valuable resides in the fact that a lot of the compositions are either exclusive or rare/hard to find gems. Not everything to be heard is acoustic axes though, since you also hear percussions, piano, flute, keyboards, distorted guitars and the likes. On the other hand, the acoustic/classical guitar is the main driving organic tonality gracing just about every composition here. You will find a few instrumental goodies scattered here and there, such as the nice opener and closer tracks on CD1 by Vàli called: "Hoestmelankoli" and "Haredans I Fjellheimen". Personally, I preferred disc one with the performances from great acts like: October Moon, Ulver, Nebelung, Ainulin Dalë and Muskox. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to say disc 2 is not good, because it is surely not. As a matter of fact, no such thing as a bad track exists around here. It is just that, to my acoustic guitar player ears, disc 1 is more appealing. For example, track 5 from Bauda ("Ocaso") is a pleasant acoustic instrumental with a haunted feel. "Löndom's : Spranget Ur Ursprungent" is another cool acoustic tune filled with a folksy/Shamanic vibe, whereas closing tracks, "Haredans I Fjellheimen", an epic piece of darkness lasting over fourteen minutes.

Whom the Moon a Nightsong Sings is an outstanding collection of acoustic/nature related musical compositions.
