ConcertsNEARfest 2005: Matthew Parmenter

Posted on Friday, December 30 2005 @ 21:11:09 CST by Yves Dubé
Concert Reviews Invited to fill one of two solo spotlights was Discipline's former front man Matthew Parmenter. While these solo spots tend to be a good time to get up and grab a cold one (beer that is) I stayed in my seat. This was one of the few 'must sees' for me. I have been a long-time Discipline fan but had yet to hear Mr Parmenter's solo material.

As he took to the stage, I was pleased to notice he was wearing his traditional grease-paint mask. He told the audience that he wore the makeup on stage to separate his stage persona from his real being: "I don't wear makeup on the street and I don't fart on stage" he exclaimed to a round of laughter and applause. He proved himself to be rather witty and a natural at manipulating an audience. He seemed painfully shy yet used his humor as a great defense mechanism and soon won the crowd over. He began his set sitting at the keyboard for a couple of tracks before switching to acoustic guitar. Not being familiar with his solo material did not take away from my enjoyment of hisset. His slightly Hammillesque delivery and dark lyrical imagery work very well together. The highlight of this short set came when he played the first half of "Crutches", from Discipline's excellent Unfolded Like Staircase album.

Those who decided to skip this set may have missed out on the sleeper show of the weekend. I'd have much rather sit through 90 minutes of Matthew Parmenter solo then half the bands on the bill. Of course, I'd rather see a Discipline 2-hour reunion show. Aguy can dream, can't he ?
