New York's Frogg Café took to the NEARfest stage after openers Wobbler for a spirited set filled with quirky and complex progressive rock and jazz fusion, with just a touch of jam band experimentalism. The band has been honing their craft over the last fewyears, playing live as much as possible and releasing a few CD's, most recently Fortunate Observer of Time on ProgRock Records.

This show was to be the culmination of their hard work, the grand stage of NEARfest, and the band took the most of theiropportunity. Playing a few tracks off the new album as well as some older songs from their repertoire, Frogg Café thrilled the crowd with their melodic and complex sound that was as fun to listen to as was challenging. Featuring soaring violin, jazzy trumpet & trombone, keyboards, guitar, bass and drums, Frogg Café's set was highlighted by "Abyss of Dissention" one of the stronger cuts off their new album, the lengthy jam of "Creatures", the complex and majestic "Waterfall Cities", and the Frank Zappa classic "Peaches in Regalia".

Those that have followed the band for a few years have noticed that there is more jazz and jam influences creeping into their music these days, much of it thanks to the classy guitar work of newest member Steve Uh and the dual hornattack of the Lieto brothers. Through it all, bassist Andrew Sussman, with his huge smile letting the crowd know how much fun he and the band are having, keeps the rhythm moving along with his cohort James Guarnieri, and Bill Ayasse, the tall man with thetiny violin, let his majestic violin lines do the talking for him. Together, these players received a warm and enthusiastic reception from the 1000+ in attendance, and gained many new fans in the process.

  • Abyss of Dissention
