Neurosis: Live at Roadburn 2007

Neurosis aren't just a band, they are almost like a force of nature, such as an impending tidle wave, overflowing volcano, or violent storm. The veteran post-rock/doom metal act, often hailed as one of the most influential & pioneering bands of the last 20 years, are releasing this near 80-minute live album Live at Roadburn 2007 on Neurot Records, featuring 9 crushing yet atmospheric songs from the last ten or so years. If you really want to experience the power of Neurosis, this is the way to do it.

The way this band jumps back and forth between huge, massive power riffing to moments of stark atmosphere, is quite impressive. Opening cut "Given to the Rising" perfectly lets you experience this, as their post rock tendencies let the listener drift along for a few minutes before the ferocious roar crushes you over the head. The lilting chords & eerie keyboards of "Burn" allow for the lead vocals to bellow at full force, while the almost Sabbath-ian stomp of "A Season in the Sky" delivers crushing doom at its very best. The band never stays in one place for too long, and just as you allow yourself to be swept away by a tranquil, albeit creepy passage, the bands behemoth muscle comes crashing down on the proceedings. The mighty "Distill" offers perhaps the most devastating attack on this monstrous live album, a bleak & agonizing display of ferocity that sees Neurosis and their musical tsunami lay to waste the venue and certainly leave no survivors. Some of this is downright chilling, the perfect soundtrack to your apocalyptic nightmare, such as "The Doorway" and "Left to Wander", two beasts that close out this destructive live set.

Neurosis aren't a band that you normally hear as part of your everyday metal conversation, but it's well known in the secret passageways of the underground just how important this band has been to the scene for the last few decades. If you want to hear a good snapshot of what this band is all about, Live at Roadburn 2007 is a great place to start.
