The ultimate live DVD/CD package for Exodus fans is finally here in the form of Shovel Headed Tour Machine-Live at Wacken and Other Assorted Atrocities. Featuring the band's full set recorded at Wacken Oper Air Festival 2008 (on both DVD and CD), as well as a bonus DVD containing an extensive documentary on the history of the band and plenty of other goodies, this is a jam-packed set for thrash fans of all ages.
The Wacken set sees the band in fine form, proving that despite the myriad of line-up changes over the years, Exodus are still as lethal and relevant a thrash metal act as they were 25 years ago. Tearing through a set of old and new classics, Exodus triumphantly render the 75,000 + fans at Germany's Wacken Festival into a raging sea, led by the twin guitar talents of Gary Holt & Lee Altus, the angry vocals of Rob Dukes, and the dynamic rhythms of returning drummer Tom Hunting and bassist Jack Gilbson. Highlights are many, including supercharged versions of "Bonded By Blood", "Children Of A Worthless God", "A Lesson in Violence", "Piranha", and "Strike Of The Beast". Not much is played from their peak period when Steve 'Zetro' Souza fronted the band, but that could be due to a limited time that they had on stage at the immense festival and wanting to focus on material from Bonded By Blood and the more recent releases. The camera work and sound is superb here, and there's plenty of footage shown of the active crowd, which makes you feel like you were right there in the pit at Wacken.
The bonus DVD features hours of documentary footage that goes into the history of the band. Seeing as it's basically hosted by the band makes it all the more enjoyable. With some vintage live footage, stories of original singer Paul Baloff, and videos, this is a must have for the Exodus fan & collector.
