Nice little side project and a cool EP we have here. Vetus Obscurum is the creation of Numinas. This project was first a solo work before the formation of Krohm in 1997. This was a means for Numinas to use the music he came up with that would not be suitable for Krohm. He recruited along the road two vocalists, Nihilist ( ex-Abazagorath) and Death (Drawn and Quartered). Numinas is playing all the instruments and wrote all the music. He shared the lyrics with Death.
It might seem strange that two vocalists and one musician are forming the line-up , but the result is actually very good. The vocals are adding a lot of atmosphere by their cold and ghostly nature, all of which fit so well in the Black Metal scenery. The fast tempo is not only kicking, but melodic as well. Crunchy riffs, distorted arpeggios and leads, coupled with moderate paces and musical breaks, all contribute in creating a very pleasant and obscure sound-scape. Tracks like : "Vetus Obscurum" and the closer title track are good examples to point out. On that last one, ambient keyboards , some sort of priest speech and beastie sounds are settling the Black Metal atmosphere very nicely.
Four tracks, 23 minutes is perhaps a bit short, although not a second was wasted and this does not have any sort of fillers. This is a tasty underground release.
