Tulus: Biography Obscene

Tulus are a Norwegian black metal band who actually came out in the early 90's alongside other acts like Mayhem, Satyricon, Emperor, and Immortal, later split up and morphed into Khold (who are now history), and now are back together again many years later with Obscene. This is cold, symphonic black metal, littered with raw, menacing vocals courtesy of Sverre (who also plays guitar), manic blast beats from Bergli, as well as a heaping amount of keyboards, horns, violin & cello, and occasional female vocals. At just under 35 minutes, the band gets down and dirty and to the point, but never are things your standard black metal formula. A song like "Stories Untold" mixes Satyricon intensity with strings that wouldn't sound out of place on the first two ELO records, while "Victim" is about as groove-laden as you are going to get on a black metal release. Fans of raging Norwegian styled black metal featuring raging guitar riffs and thunderous blast beats will love "Chamber's Disgust", "Morbid Curiosity", and the intense "Torches Quenched". Synths and piano permeate most of the songs, providing a nice backdrop of color and more than a fair share of atmosphere. Fans of the more varied & progressive end of the black metal spectrum would be well advised to check out Biography Obscene-it's not going to set the world on fire, but there is enough variety and interesting ideas going on throughout this release to recommend.
