Scott Allen Project: What Lies Beyond Words

California guitarist and G.I.T. graduate, Scott Allen, has independently re-released his Scott Allen Project CD, What Lies Beyond Words. Co-Produced by Tesla guitarist Frank Hannon and Scott Allen himself, this 11 track instrumental CD is an upbeat Hard Rock/ Metal record with a lot of energy.

The Scott Allen Project is a 4 piece band, featuring Brian Kinney on Bass, Rhythm guitarist Marty Cresci and drummer, Cedric Wilmott. What Lies Beyond Words is a decent release with some bright moments, such as the lead off song, "U Want Some Of This (Bring It On), a faster paced rocker with some nice speedy guitar chops.

Not that this CD is a poor record, it just doesn't set the world on fire. It is a very average instrumental release by a graduate from the Guitar Institute of Technology that would lead you to expect more from him. Not that he is a bad player, he isn't that, but I expected more. There are the obvious "speed for speed sake" licks, but nothing to raise the bar with.

If you are a fan of Instrumental guitar based records in the vain of Vai, Satriani or even John 5, then you may be a bit disappointed in What Lies Beyond Words. This is a rather tame release in an Instrumental guitar world filled with more aggressive and interesting players.
