Priestess: Hello Master

Mainstream media outlets are hailing Priestess as igniters of (in the words of Spin) a "classic-metal revival." Excuse me, but we all know that classic metal never really went away; it just festered in the underground for awhile. But thanks to bands like Wolfmother, Queens of the Stone Age and even The Darkness, it's suddenly hip again to throw the horns and admit you still listen to Black Sabbath, AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. On Hello Master, the lean and mean music of Quebec's Priestess takes influences from all of those bands and a few others, including The Offspring and The Black Crowes and then pummels listeners back to the glory days with songs like "Run Home," "Talk to Her" and "Time Will Cut You Down." This is no-frills, gimmick-free, good-time hard-and-heavy music meant to drive spikes through the scrawny vocal cords of the whiny bands those mainstream magazines usually champion. Heavy-metal machismo blurs with garage-rock messiness, resulting in classic-rock madness with an appeal that spans generations. As proof, consider that Priestess has opened for everyone from Black Label Society to Motorhead to Mastodon. And the provocative name? Band members say it helps attract women who haven't even heard the music of Priestess. Very cool, guys.
