Poisonblack: Lust Stained Despair

Poisonblack arises once again from the ashes of Sentenced. The title pretty much says it all: for lust and despair are the focal points of the gothic tinged heavy metal contained within the equally gloomy album cover. Vocalist/guitarist Ville Laihiala's tortured tales of betrayal and love gone sour come through loud and clear on "Nothing Else Remains", "The Darkest Lie" and the ballad "Pain Becomes Me". Laihiala is the star of the show, but the rest of the band have their moments to shine as well. I particularly enjoy the tasteful, but restrained keyboards of Marco Sneck. He isn't one to take solos but the bed of keyboard strings are a crucial additive to songs like "Nail" and the lightly symphonic "Hollow Be My Name". There are some great riffs on Lust Stained Despair and the production is solid as well. While there is nothing all that unique about Poisonblack, they do a nice job of bridging "Euro metal" with the modern gothic bands that typically occupy the second stage on the annual Ozzfest tours. Recommended.
