Beneath the Sky: What Demons Do To Saints

From Cincinnati comes Beneath the Sky and their full-length debut for Victory Records What Demons Do To Saints. Differing quite a bit from many of the other bands on the Victory roster, Beneath The Sky play a sort of black/death-core, a strange yet exciting hybrid that includes elements of death metal, black metal, and hardcore. Ultimately it's pretty intense and heavy, with some stellar instrumentation and evil sounding vocals. Lead singer Joey Nelson sure has a unhuman vocal range, as he bellows forth plenty of death metal growls, black metal shrieks, and hardcore barks, as well as the occasional clean vocal, all throughout this album. Providing the metal thunder is the guitar duo of Jeff Nelson & Chris Profitt, Matt Jones the ethereal & progressive sounding keyboards, and the rhythm section of bassist/backing vocalist Nick Scarberry and drummer Brandon Sowder. With big keyboard orchestrations providing the backdrop, the band blast forward with their musical menace on tracks like "7861", "Last Call", and the excellent "For Each Remembered Name", showing off plenty of extreme ferocity as well as as a sophisticated knack for creating intelligent arrangements. With a massive sounding production that recalls some of the European heavyweights such as Dimmu Borgir, Hypocrisy, and Cradle of Filth, as well as such greats from the US like Killswitch Engage, The Agony Scene, Shadows Fall, The Acacia Strain, and Hatebreed, What Demons Do To Saints is ultimately a kick ass release from a band that is sure to make some waves. It's not the most original CD you will ever hear, but it's damn impressive, and has many elements that will appeal to a wide variety of metal listeners.

Beneath the Sky has arrived.
