Taylor's Free Universe: Manipulated by Taylor

The ever prolific Robin Taylor returns with another Taylor's Free Universe album, this time a live recording from Copenhagen in 2005. Jumping into Taylor's Free Universe with no prior experience is a little like a mathematically challenged college student opting to take Calculus II to fulfill a core general education requirement: you either get it or you don't. I fall somewhere in the middle camp, admiring the band for their unyielding intellectual spin on a fusion of avant-garde jazz and electronic loops. The eleven-minute "Collective Acid Dive" is one such example, grafting a fairly approachable freeform saxophone improvisation onto a bed of found sounds, electronic effects, drones, thips and blips. "Energizing" blends free jazz, Krautrock and Robert Frippisms into a perplexing wave of crescendos for all of two minutes. "(Never Understood) Manestreem Bob" is about as accessible as the album gets and will probably be the most enjoyable track for non-jazz scholars. Robin Taylor's ensemble is beyond reproach in terms of musicianship and saxophonist Karsten Vogel is particularly impressive. I never made it past Algebra I, but for those who enjoy a challenge, you'll enjoy being Manipulated by Taylor.
