JPL III: Cannibales

Cannibales is the third solo album from Jean-Pierre Louveton, guitarist for the French progressive rock band Nemo. Think recent Porcupine Tree combined with theatrical French vocals akin to Ange and you'll have some idea of where Louveton is coming from. His crunchy electric guitar playing is similar to Steven Wilson and is the instrumental focal point here, along with tasteful atmospheric keyboards courtesy of Guillaume Fointaine. The general tone of the CD is dark and fairly heavy. This is not complex, multi-layered music, although there are a couple of ten-minute epics in the form of "St. Petrole" and the title track. The instrumental section of "St. Petrole" has some interesting Eastern influences and a bit of (sampled?) flute here and there while "Cannibales" is plenty dark and gloomy and contains some nice, if restrained guitar/keyboard interplay. "Guest Star War" is an enjoyable instrumental featuring electric guitar leads from several guest artists, hence the title. Those who enjoy modern progressive music like Porcupine Tree, Steve Hogarth era Marillion or perhaps even Radiohead, will find plenty here to their liking. One's appreciation may be limited without a basic understanding of the language of love, but nonetheless Cannibales deserves a solid recommendation.
