1349: Hellfire

Welcome to hell indeed! On their 3rd full length release for Candlelight records, Norwegian black metal band 1349 take you on a wicked unrelenting tour to the depths of the abyss as they absolutely pummel the listener into oblivion with their raw, brutal onslaught. The band is comprised of vocalist Ravn, guitarists Tjalve and Archaon, bassist Seidemann and features Satyricon member Frost on the drums. The music on Hellfire is not that original however as the majority of the songs on this disc blaze by at breakneck speed with very little or no change in tempo. The black metal genre has come a long way from the days of Venom, Slayer or Possessed and as the scene began to move further underground it seemed like the majority of the bands were only interested in upping the 'shock and awe' ante and forgot about making the actual music. There has been a major market for this music in Scandinavia for quite some time now and the scene has continued to flourish and grow. I can think of a handful of bands to compare 1349 to, such as Immortal or label mates Gorgoroth, who are all doing music in the same vein but aren't really pushing the musical genre any further. The band does attempt a few variances here and there such as the 13 minute title track and make no mistake the music on Hellfire is definitely brutal and uncompromising but as far as groundbreaking goes it comes up short.
