Fans of the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) will probably be familiar with this new CD from Neurotica, as the band's music has been featured quite a bit in recent RAW and Smackdown broadcasts. Neurotica are a five piece nu-metal band from Florida that are heavy on aggression yet have lots of classic hard rock flourishes that help their music rise above many of the newer bands on the scene today.
The dark shadow of Alice in Chains lurks in tunes like "Said She" and "Living in Dog Years", as singer Kelly Shaefer has a nasal tone similar to the late Layne Staley. The twin guitars of Shawn Bowen and Chris Rollo effectively lay down some meaty and tasty riffs throughout, especially on "Stars in My Eyes", complete with plenty of wah-wah drenched solos. "Up in the Hay" has a Black Label Society feel to it thanks to the heavy guitar riffs and pounding bass and drums from Migwell Przybyl and Jason West. Shaefer shows off his powerful lungs to great effect here, as the band cooks on all cylinders for a potential mosh pit favorite. A slower, doomier pace is set on " A Lot of the Same", a Sabbath meets Alice in Chains meets BLS sledgehammer of a tune that slowly builds into almost Korn-like intensity.
This is a great debut, full of power and conviction, and with Vince MacMahon's WWE machine behind it, these guys should go far. Recommended.
