Christie, Shawn: Starting From ZerÝ
Shawn Christie is a New Jersey born guitarist now residing in Atlantic City. He recently released his debut album titled Starting From ZerÝ. This is instrumental guitar rock done very well indeed as Christie shows just how versatile a player he is. Joining Christie are Timothy Esterly (bass) and Josh Orlando (drums) as well as a few guest musicians including Brett Garsed (Planet X, Derek Sherinian).
The disc begins with the powerful "Diffraction Theory" showcasing Christie's melodic phrasing whether going for a more delicate approach or full bore shredding. His guitar work is tasty throughout. On "Intemperate" his melodic lead guitar is front and center and the quieter interludes show Christie doesn't have to shred to be effective. His soaring notes come to life in the melodic "Indigo Haze" as his playing has plenty of depth and feeling. With "West Coast Cool" the dynamic is more laid back having a definite west coast vibe whereas "Southern Dirty Jersey" is a completely different beast as Christie goes for a country boogie sound. The playing is fast including the excellent fiddle of Brian Fitzgerald. Garsed and Christie each get some solo work in on the blistering "Out To It" with both adding their own unique style offering up another highlight. The jazzy fusion of "In The City" featuring stellar electric piano from Anil Veeraraj and an excellent guitar solo from Allen Hinds is another highlight.
I think fans of instrumental guitar rock or just like guitar in general will really dig this album. I know I did. Recommended.
