Moebius: Hybris

The Italian Extreme Prog/Math Metal outfit, Moebius, have put together their first full length concept album entitled, Hybris. This auspicious debut record is filled with heavy Gojira and Meshuggah-like, multi-stringed, low tuned grooves within that "Djent"/Progressive Death Metal label.

Hybris clocks in around an hour and there are 11 tracks in all, even though they are labeled from 00 to 10, with the first and last song being titled the same! Something that I have never seen done before. CD opener is labeled as "00- Inflection II" and contains a myriad of percussion sound effects, complete with what sounds like a Didgeridoo, something that you certainly don't hear everyday. This gives way to "Obsidian", a slow detuned groove that is worthy of the Nothing era of the Mighty Meshuggah. Hybris does invoke your head to involuntarily headbang, so be prepared for a steady flow of neck bobbing.

Thickly percussive riffing mixed with odd-metered grooves, that have an ever looming atmospheric undertone is what Moebius does and does very well. Songs are super tight and with that type of off time jolting going on, songs are never able to become stifled or bland. For example, there is an entire track played over top of a secret message being translated in Morse Code!! To say that this is an ambitious record is a mild understatement! Hybris is a heavy blend of Progressive and Groove/Extreme Metal influences and it is quite an interesting listen.
