Argus: From Fields of Fire

In the mood for some classic sounding metal with a touch of doom? Then look no further than the latest release on Cruz Del Sur from Pennsylvania act Argus, titled From Fields of Fire. Such as always seems to be the case with everything this label releases, From Fields of Fire is a classy yet quite potent slab of metal, Argus paying homage to the greats of the past yet achieving their own style and vision, the album containing nine tracks drenched with heavy riffing, twin-guitar solos, powerful vocals, and thunderous rhythms. The band are comprised of:

Brian "Butch" Balich - Vocals
Kevin Latchaw - Drums
Dave Watson - Guitars
Jason Mucio - Guitars
Justin Campbell - Bass

After the brief opening instrumental "Into the Fields of Fire", the guys blast into the majestic "Devils of Your Time", a hard charging metal anthem filled with a non-stop assortment of expert guitar riffs and Balich's soaring vocals. "As a Thousand Thieves" is equally as memorable, the galloping rhythms saddled alongside some crunchy guitar firepower and more impressive vocal histrionics courtesy of Balich. The moody "216" adds some progressive metal elements and some of the albums most impressive guitar solos, while the 11+ minute epic "Infinite Lives, Infinite Doors" takes the listener down many twists and turns, the near Iced Earth riffing attack precise and pulverizing, the vocals spot on, all providing the listener with one headbanging moment after another. Check out the middle section for some very cool prog-rock moments which further adds to the excellence of this mighty song. "Hour of Longing" contains some steamrolling doom laden passages (think Grand Magus at their best), and Balich's emotional wailing is a must hear on the brooding "No Right to Grieve", an atmospheric doom track that has plenty of moody power & might.

Ultimately, From Fields of Fire is a hell of an album, filled with a never ending supply of variety and crushing musical performances all around from the band, and expertly produced as well. Argus are on the fast track to becoming metal elite folks, and yet again, we have another outstanding release from the folks at Cruz Del Sur. Do not miss this one!
