Dreadnaught: Hard Chargin'

Dreadnaught is an American progressive rock band based out of New Hampshire. I believe they formed sometime in the '90s and have five albums to their credit, their latest titled Hard Chargin'. These guys are a talented bunch as the music they present is not conventional by any means. They have a diverse sound that is quite difficult to describe as they blend so many different styles into the mix. The band refers to it as 'Progabilly' which likely captures the essence of what they are all about. Mixing funk, blues, jazz rock, Americana, progressive and other forms into a blender and voila, this is what you get; a highly listenable yet complex musical form with countless twists and turns.

It's hard to know really where to begin with this one as it is such a varied and complex album. The first track "Have A Drink With Dreadnaught" begins with a perky organ melody sounding like something Elvis Costello and the Attractions might have come up with thirty-five years ago. The band is incredibly tight, the rhythms infectious and this song flat out rocks. With "Gaudy Baubles" the band add Indian flavours to their blocked guitar rhythms, keyboard runs and flute. The bluesy/funky "Takin' A Ride With The Fat Man (Fatta Fatta Puck Puck) is very Zappa-esque with its numerous change ups and quirky vocal arrangement. The catchy "Express Delight" delves into a jazz rock sound with excellent keyboards and sax as does the more pure jazz of "Gets The Grease". Even country rock crops up on the catchy but short "That's The Way That You Do It (Our Way)".

You may think having so many styles may be to the album's detriment but that's not the case as Hard Chargin' is a coherent and imaginative piece that should have eclectic music fans chomping at the bit. Recommended.
