Astral Son: Mind's Eye

Astral Son is the brainchild of Netherlands' artist/musician Leonardo Soundweaver. He released his first album Gurumaya in 2013 followed by Silver Moon in 2015 and now Mind's Eye in 2016. I suppose you could think of these albums as a trilogy of sorts as the artwork is similar although Mind's Eye is the only album I have yet to hear. After listening to this latest platter I certainly would like to explore his previous efforts as this is an excellent slice of '70s inspired space/psychedelic rock.

This is a true solo album as all the songs were written and performed by Leonardo himself. He also produced the disc demonstrating his knowledge of the entire recording process. The instrument list includes electric guitar (ebow and glissando), bass guitar, acoustic guitar, electric tambura, organs, synths, harmonium, programmed drums, percussion and vocals.

He draws his influences from artists like Gong, Hawkwind, Tangerine Dream and early Pink Floyd so if you are a fan of space and psychedelic rock this will be well worth your investigation.

The first track "Time for Change" sets your cosmic ride in motion with its celestial gathering of fuzzy sustained guitar chords, synths and laid back vocals. The guitar gets heavier with the occasional blast of trippiness and there is an early Floyd vibe at times. A dreamy soundscape of shimmering synths and guitar can be heard on the next track "Brainstorm" which has a sort of trance-like effect with dense layers of sound. "The Way" is a little mellower with a clear homage to early Floyd, both musically and vocally. The ending build-up of synths is really cool. "See Your Self" has a nice groove heard through a thick haze of psychedelia and the appropriately titled "Dream" features a sublime organ intro that is supremely cosmic in all aspects.

As you can ascertain I am very impressed with Mind's Eye. A prime example of the psychedelic/space rock genre.
