Traindodge: The Truth

Double albums have a tendency to become sprawling, self-indulgent affairs, which is exactly what happens with The Truth - a two-CD set from Norman, Okla.-based Traindodge that opens with the last line listeners want to hear: "I can't sing but hear me out."

After one hour and 45 minutes of hearing vocalist Jason Smith and the rest of his four bandmates out, I can safely say that Traindodge makes eclectic, acquired-taste music that borders on progressive but might better be classified as modern haphazard indie rock. Culling influences from Fugazi, Jawbox, Hoover, Season to Risk and Shiner, these two discs offer plenty of diversity by delving into hard rock, emo pop, hardcore punk and ambient noise. That might be enough to convince fans of adventurous music to give The Truth a try, but it'll require patience. At least the song titles and lyrics are clever.
