Here is another release from Quebec metallers Voivod. Infini was originally released in 2009. This version is the recently released gold disc from Metal Mind Productions housed in a digipack and limited to two thousand copies.
As with the previous album Katorz, Infini features the guitar work of Denis D'Amour (aka Piggy). He unfortunately passed away a few years earlier but the band saw fit to use Piggy's guitar parts he had recorded on his computer to make one last final tribute to their fallen comrade. Infini begins right where Katorz left off with the intensely heavy opening tune "God Phones". Thrashy guitar chords churn into some pretty cool riff progressions and dynamic tempo changes. The punky "From The Cave" isn't near as interesting and is just okay for me but the band quickly right the ship with the catchier "Earthache" and the intriguing "Global Warning" beginning with ambient effects and more lethal riffage. Another short ambient intro begins "A Room With A V.U." before snarling guitar chords slowly yield to a more discordant outro. The grungy-like "In Orbit" is a heavy rocker reminding me a little of Nirvana.
One of my favourites is the slow burn of "Morpheus" where the riffs are moodier and more sinister sounding with some pretty cool sci-fi effects as well.
Infini is an impressive follow up to Katorz and given how this album came together I don't think Voivod fans could have asked for much more. Infini rates a very solid 3.5 stars.
