No Name Experience, The (TNNE): The Clock That Went Backwards

Have you ever wished you could turn back the clock and do things differently? I think most of us have and that is precisely the theme behind The Clock That Went Backwards, the new album from The No Name Experience.

First a little background. The band No Name released their first album in 1993. After four studio albums, their last in 2006, the band broke up in 2011. Original members Alex Rukavina (keyboards) and Patrick Kiefer (vocals) decided to reform under a different name, thus The No Name Experience was born. The rest of the band includes Michel Volkmann (guitars), Gilles Wagner (drums), Claude Zeimes (bass) and special guest Fred Hormain (saxophone).

The band hail from Luxembourg, not exactly a country well known in progressive rock circles. The punchy "My Inner Clock" is an excellent slice of neo prog in the vein of Pendragon, IQ or even '80s Pink Floyd. Lots of driving rhythms, Tony Banks style keyboards and excellent lead vocals. "Clairvoyance" is a short track with lovely piano and acoustic guitar and leads directly into "About Angels And Devils", another melodic gem with a heavier edge. "Looking Back And Forward" is a little more poignant with catchy guitar riffs and emotive vocals. The title track features great keyboard sounds and a ripping guitar solo from Volkmann. "Circles Of Life" is another great track featuring Volkmann's melodic lead work and saxophone to add a bit of colour and texture to the overall moody sound.

Fans of neo prog in general and latter day Floyd should love The Clock That Went Backwards. I feel fortunate having discovered this gem and I think you will too.
