Ektomorf: Retribution

Ektomorf is a hard-hitting and intense extreme metal band from Hungary. I don't know much about the metal scene in that country, but I do know that Ektomorf has developed a good reputation over their 21 year history, having built up a loyal fan base around Europe mostly through extensive touring and key appearances at major festivals.

With respect to the other members of this band, the driving force behind Ektomorf is lead singer / guitarist Zoli Farkas who is also the only original member of the band. Listeners who don't like his voice won't have much to enjoy here. Fortunately, he has pretty good vocal style, one that is at once clean and rotten. He has a hardcore-like delivery, a mixture of yelling and melodic declaiming. Ultimately rough and aggressive, his vocals give this album much of its overall appeal. I suggest that fans new to this band give several tracks a listen, especially since the opening track has a bit too much Zoli at first. Aside from his vocals, Zoli's guitars sound great, delivering a strong, distorted burn from start to finish. The drums and bass parts effectively add to the chaos.

The bulk of this album is a mixture of hardcore / extreme metal anthems. The lyrics are often angry rants against all manner of things. Near the end of the album, things slow down a bit. To me, these tracksó"Save Me," "Whisper," and "Collapsed Bridge" were less interesting. They weren't bad, just not very compelling. Ektomorf should never slow things down that much. Still, this is a solid release from a band that knows how to pack a punch.
