Mithras: Worlds Beyond The Veil

Dang. There's some absolutely bitchin and brutal stuff here, stuff that makes you stand up straight like you do at the sounding of a weather alert on the evening news. And there's also stuff that makes you question whether this album's tight or a mess, whether it breaks new ground or tries too hard to do so, whether those who've fallen all over themselves praising this unique and atmospheric death metal-cum-space rock outfit were trying too hard to be hip or if they really knew what they were talking about. At first, it's hard to tell.

Like DJ Dangermouse's The Gray Album which mixed hip hop with the Beatles and Jay-Z and resulted in nothing more than Amalgamation Stew, Worlds Beyond The Veil manages to blend stuff that would be at home on a Mayhem album with stuff that might be at home on one of Robert Fripp's solo outings but doesn't really get much farther than suggesting some cool things.

"Break The Worlds' Divide" has an excellent and beautiful coda but can't bring the metal and "prog" worlds together fully, at least not in such a way that we're convinced this outfit's doing more than trying to get lucky. It's the music of chance and chances are you'll either love it or hate. This scribe, however, remains impressed but unsure that Worlds Beyond The Veil will nail you to the wall for all to see.
