A Cosmic Trail: Il-Mistral

This is a nice disc of mainly prog metal, influenced by, I think bands as disparate as Yes, Genesis and Goblin. Each song creates a different mood. The opening track, the brief "Calm," seems influenced by mid-period Yes. "Mistral I" is a more intense metalesque composition. I should note that all the songs are instrumentals; no vocals appear on this disc. "Cromlech" ups the intensity beyond that of "Mistral I", moving into the kind of hyper intense music Voivod plays, though without the vocals that are so much a part of that band. "In Ertia" begins with a pulse beat, and then shifts to a more industrial styling, and then to a lyrical section, actually very pretty and somewhat somber. It continues its shape shifting until its end. "Thwart Progress" is the most traditionally metal of all the songs on this disc. It uses a sustained guitar to great effect. "A Ghostly Whisper" sounds almost otherworldly with its siren-like background. The final song, "Mistral II," begins with acoustic guitar and slow tempo. It then builds intensity before it slows it down again to its conclusion. In the world of prog metal, this is very good.
