Angelica: Thrive

Angelica Rylin is the lead singer of The Murder of My Sweet, a combo of whom I know precisely nothing. "I always wanted to record an album like this" says Angelica, "my childhood heroes were Robin Beck, Ann Wilson of Heart, Leigh Matty of Romeo's Daughter". Well that's a bit of a bonus because any one of those AOR icons would be thrilled to have their name on such a classy record as this one. From the hook laden "Breaking My Heart Again" through the wonderful mid tempo "Nothing Else You Can Break" (which channels the spirit of late 80s Whitesnake) to the fabulous keyboard fluff of "Riding Out the Storm" this album has quality running all the way through.

In many ways this shouldn't be much of a surprise as the credits reveal the involvement of such luminaries as as Jesper Stromblad (ex-In Flames), Magnus Karlsson (of the mighty Primal Fear), Per Berquist (Smash Into Pieces). Keyboardist Matt Guillory (James LaBrie) turns up alongside Harry Hess, Daniel Flores, Robert Sall, the ubiquitous Alessandro Del Vecchio and Anders Wigelius. As a collective they have made a splendid album which will most certainly appeal to the hardcore melodic rock crowd and in a fair world would find great songs like "You Will Never Win" blaring out of radios the world over. That is not to say that this a mere exercise in retro AOR, no siree, this is a much more modern take on the genre as can be heard on "This Kiss Is Just For You" which straddles classic melodic rock with a much more up-to-date vibe and production.
