Satan: Life Sentence

Way back in 1983 there was a change in the air and Metal was in the grip of The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. Newcastle band Satan released their first album Court In The Act to much critical acclaim, now a mere thirty years on they've released the follow up Life Sentence.

So was the thirty year wait worth it? You have to agree the timing is impeccable with many bands now following where Satan left off in '83 and embracing the vintage sound of the bands back then. Satan however push aside all pretenders and deliver an album that sounds classic yet slots right in to what we listen to today. For guys new to the band don't expect death growls or grunts, the vocals are clean and precise, Brian Ross delivering a great performance. As are the stunning guitars performing subtle injections of variation throughout, Steve Ramsey & Russ Tippins feed off each other perfectly. 'Time To Die', 'Twenty Twenty Five' and the truly astounding 'Cenotaph' brings the fist to the air amongst a wave of denim and hair. Sounding as fresh and relevant as the day they formed, Satan has made the wait worth it. The mix of strong powerful riffs combined with its melody and nods to the thrash overlord ensures that Satan have revitalized a band we once thought all but dead. This album is going have a lot of bands shaking in their cut off jackets, an impressive piece of work that will continue to influence bands in the future.

A Life Sentence in prison is approximately thirty years; the only crime here is that we've had to wait so long for this fantastic piece of Metal Majesty…Don't make us wait this long again lads!
