Airless: Changes

I'm trying hard to resist the opportunity to be a real idiot and attempt to list the other contenders in the competition for what Lion Music describes as being, "Spain's leading melodic hard rock act," as Spain doesn't necessarily set the pulse racing when it comes to rock music of any sort. Airless mat well begin to change that particular perception. Changes is a highly creditable effort and congratulations must go to the band; Iñaki Lazcano: vocals, Robert Rodrigo: guitars, Miguel Manjon: bass and Pako Marinez de Musitu: drums who perform alongside the keyboards of Diego Rois as well as the ubiquitous Danny Vaughn who lends his undoubted class to the title track.

Being frank, Airless play the kind of melodic rock which is currently utterly moribund commercially at the moment (and has been for many years and probably will be for many more) but for the few disciples of the genre there is a great deal to enjoy. "Start Again", for example appears to delve straight into the big book of AOR clichés;

"Now that I've lost you Baby
Now that my heart and soul are torn
Now my whole world is gone…"

From this unpromising start the song continues to sound like early to mid-FM (the band, not the radio frequency) and this is always to be welcomed. There isn't an actual duff track on Changes and if it isn't exactly brimming with originality, so what? It's pretty good and worthy of attention for those who like their rock melodic.
