F.E.A.S.T. : Strong Wild And Free

Completing a decent trio of releases from the Avenue of Allies label (see Sven Larsson and Danger Zone reviews elsewhere on the site) is this melodic 80's retro-rock CD from Italy's F.E.A.S.T. Strong Wild And Free is the follow-up to debut album Rise (from 2010) and since that time the project has evolved into a fully-fledged band line-up with more than 100 live shows behind them. One look at the song titles will tell you all you need to know about how this album sounds 'Pleasure And Pain', 'Heart And Soul' and 'Hard Rockin' Man' all place a strong emphasis on catchy hooks, riffs and melodies with some power-packed vocals from frontman, songwriter and guitarist Fabri Kiareli.

Another band that are keeping the spirit of rock's commercial peak alive, with the right label and promotion Strong Wild And Free may well have been a huge success during the age of multi-million sales but in 2012 is yet one of many similar releases that are released via the European rock labels month after month. There are a host of bands and artists that could be named here pick any one from 100's of 80's rockers - and F.E.A.S.T. won't win many points for originality but where they do succeed is in the classy execution, crystal clear production and unashamedly wearing their influences on their sleeves. 'A Million Years' might be the best Whitesnake ballad that David Coverdale has still to write and the cover version of Stevie Wonder's 'Dancing To The Rhythm' offers a vibrant and up-tempo rockin' twist on the original with Kiareli soloing away wildly. A child's spoken word introduction to the closing, acoustic swept, 'Children Of Beslan' adds another touch of authenticity before the layers of keyboards and guitars kick in and the album ends on a real high with arguably the strongest track. An enjoyable CD, and definitely worth checking out for fans of the era.
