After: No Attachments

No Attachments (Metal Mind Productions) is the 3rd release from the decade old Polish band, After. This 10 track record has a very American Indie Rock feel with Prog Rock tinged undertone. These guys aren't quite Metal, nor Prog Rock and not exactly Hard Rock either, but something in between and slightly to the left. Imagine Bowie-esque '70s Rock fused with '90s Alt Rock wrapped in a shiny Progressive exterior of modern times and you're beginning to understand that After are difficult to put into a category or a box.

No Attachments fires off with, "All Left Behind", with energetic guitar riffing and acoustic chording underneath; the record is off to a soothing beginning. "Enchanted" sparks up that eerie 70's Bowie feel, complete with sound effects at the end that remind me of "Major Tom" and "My Straight Pass" has that Porcupine Tree breathy vibe to it. Dynamic and dark simultaneously, After does meld the lines of different genres of Rock music nicely. The twin guitar tandem is not used in a twin lead fashion, but rather in a spatial, textured way, creating atmosphere and tension, while Vocals are quite empathic and pleading throughout the entire disc with the songwriting and musicianship being top notch.

After consists of Krzysiek Drogowski/vocals, Czarek Bregier and Wojtek Tymiński/guitars, Mariusz Ziólkowski/bass and RadekWięckowski/drums, and together they have created a very pleasant listen with No Attachments. The album is more mainstream than Prog but also has enough elements to it to keep a Prog Rock fan happy. This is an interesting listen with enough meat on its bones for different types of fans to sink their collective teeth into.
