Twisted Sister: Double Live (DVD)

Twisted Sister fans will be delighted to know that there is a new double DVD set out right now entitled, Double Live, which features 2 completely different shows from opposite ends of Twisted Sister's career, separatedby almost 20 years. The 1st DVD being from the end of TS's club days, called "North Stage Theater '82". This show was recorded 2 days before the band was set to leave for England to record their 1st album, Under The Blade and finds the band in top notch form, honed from endless club gigs for over 6 years, enroute to finally being signed by Secret Records. Twisted Sister was a machine in those days and ANYONE that saw them back in those days can attest to their greatness, yours truly included!

"North Stage Theater '82" consists of 14 tracks and bonus material with interviews and features songs that were already local classic's and would soon become worldwide favorites, as well as lesser known songs that were club favorites back in the "early days". TS crushes through "standards" like, "Under the Blade", "What You Don't Know (Sure CanHurt You)", "Destroyer", "Bad Boys of Rock 'n'Roll and "Sin After Sin" and also serve up the title track of their 2nd record (remember they had yet to record their 1st record!!),"You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll". The winner here is the amazing video quality of this show. This was shot in 1982 and I expectedsome grainy, difficult to watch set, but to quite the contrary, the restored video is fabulous to watch and you will find yourself forgetting that it was actually shot in '82. What a fantastic job and what a great show from a New York legend. Dee and the boys stormed that stage on Long Island in '82 and the live document captured here is worth the price of this DVD set alone.

The 2nd disc is from the "New York Steel '01" benefit show held in NYC in November of 2001 for the New York Police & Fire Widows' & Children's Benefit Fund at the Hammerstein Ballroom after the 9/11 attacks. This benefit was put together by VH1's "That MetalShow" host, Eddie Trunk, who was able to reunite Twisted Sister after 13 years of in- fighting for this special event. Amidst all of the terror in NY during that time, good came out of this unspeakable act and 5 members of a band that didn't think they would ever all step out onto the same stage again, did and the 13 song set they did that night was all caught for us all to witness. This show would also serve as the catalyst for the band actually reforming.

The "NY Steel" show is a 13 song set filled with TS classic's and even an old club days song, "You Know I Cry", thrown in for a special treat. The DVD also includes bonus interviews about the show, 9/11 and also a special photo gallery. Dee Snider again shows why he was and still is one of the best front men in Hard Rock and Heavy Metal history. His energy on both DVD's is infectious and just goes to show you that with even 20 years between these 2 shows, he is as good on both vocally and showmanship wise as he ever was. Dee hasn't lost a step.

All and all, this 2 DVD set filled both a young and hungry Twisted Sister and the older and just reformed band is a great reflection of 2 different eras of the band's history. You get a total of 27 songs and about 194 minutes of Twisted Sister to keep even the most rabid SMF happy and both DVD's look and sound great. I was completely impressed with the "North Stage Theater '82 DVD, as it brought back a lot of memories as a Jr. High School kid. Thank god for bands that had the foresight to capture their early days on video, because as we get older the memories of those awesome days gone by are all we have left. Check this out this DVD set, you won't bedisappointed.
