Black Widow: Sleeping With Demons

Black Widow can trace their origins back to the late 60's when in its first incarnation the band were onetime rivals to the fledging Black Sabbath. With a band image that drew heavily on Satanism and the occult (even dabbling in on stage mock sacrifices), Black Widow were early exponents of the macabre metal underground that Ghost are presently bringing to the mainstream. Best remembered for the single "Come to the Sabbat", the Widow petered out in the mid-70's only for original members Clive Jones (sax, flute, keys) and Geoff Griffiths (vocals, guitars) to reform in 2007.

Sleeping With Demons certainly plays up to the bands Lucifer worshipping roots although you have to feel that on the likes of "Hail Satan" tongues are firmly in cheeks and it is, of course, all very Spinal Tap . Featuring former Sabbath frontman Tony Martin on guest vocals, "Hail Satan" is pretty much a re-write of "Come to the Sabbat" with the hook "Hail Satan, Demon God, Hail Satan, Drink my blood" repeated ad infinitum. Plenty of flutes, demonic voices and shrieking and howling duly follows on the likes of "Party Time for Demons" and "Even the Devil Gets the Blues". Black Widow turn their hand to prog, doom, blues and good old rock and roll across fifteen tracks of Devil bothering mayhem.

Shattering the illusion somewhat, instead of forked tails and horns the booklet reveals Clive and Geoff as two pensioners waiting for the number 7 bus. All in all, pretty good fun.
