Shaman: Origins

THIAGO BIANCHI Vocalist, RICARDO CONFESSORI Drums, LEO MANCINI Guitar, FE QUESADA Bass; these musicians are Shaman, and they have the origin in Brazil and must not be mistaken with Finnish band of the same name, although as I gather they have ceased to exsist. Shaman have strong links to another Brazilian Power/heavy Metal band called Angra as members from Angra started Shaman in early 2000. Vocalist Andre Matos recently left the band, and was replaced by Bianchi.

Shaman make symphonic Metal as so many do, fast but melodic through the use of keyboards, strong interaction between keyboards and guitar. They mix symphonic sounds with metal sounds, At times coming close to Progressive Metal in the vein of Symphony X or Fates Warning. I can even consider naming their Brazilian forefather Angra. The songs are well structured but not special, as I often think the overall production sounds too thin for this type of music, I believe a live performance will do the music more justice.

The music did not grab me, I think it's well played but it didn't stick. After a couple of spins I still cannot remember any of the songs let alone sing along, which I believe to be essential to the genre. Songs in this genre are usually anthemic in nature , but there's something here that is missing. Otherwise, a good album, with the best track for me being "Finally Home".
