Italian label Code666 has recently released their second compilation disc. This time around, they got Ephel Duath's main man Davide Tiso to do the selections. Not only that, but he also wrote short compositions introducing the actual ten songs.
So, what do we have here? Ten songs, previously unreleased and written especially for this compilation. Code666 is the type of label that chooses acts with a certain avant-gardist perspective. Their First album ever to come out was Rakoth's Planeshift. They signed quite a few interesting bands including: Atrox, Void of Silence, France, Thee Maldoror Kollective, Enid and Negura Bunget amongst others. I am not sure if those bands are still under their wings at this time. Vol. II presents some good, lesser good and other very good acts. The good ones include: Minethorn, The Axxis of Perdition, Dsd and Diabolicum. Then, of the ten, Herrschaft (techno/indust./black metal), The Oath and The Prophecy (Doom with clean nasal vocals�) figure as the least interesting ones. And now, the winners are: the closing bands: Negura Bunget and Fen (previously on Northern Silence's roster). Those two are actually folk/black metal bands, and seemingly out of place here. Still, their compositions are lengthy and combine folksy parts with cool black metal ambiences. Fen's "Twilight Descends (Eulogy) clocks in fifteen minutes while Negura Bunget's "Cumpana" lasts over six minutes. My overall favorite track was written by Void of Silence. Mixing dramatic tones with acoustic guitars and apocalyptic sounds, this band has always impressed me with their heavy and oppressive intensity.
All in all, this is not bad and somewhat interesting, though I feel Code666 used to have better bands in the past than they do now.
