ConcertsNEARfest 2005: The Muffins

Concert Reviews
Every year, NEARfest usually has a band that injects some jazz or fusion into the overall proggy vibe of the bill, this year that task fell on the shoulders of The Muffins, a much loved veteran US band who have been around since the late 70's. The band disbanded in the early 80's and reunited a few years back and have been pretty busy recording and gigging, and the NF crowd was very happy to see them grace the stage in Bethlehem.

While the bands excellent set, with songs culled from recent albums like Double Negative, Bandwidth, as well as their late 70's & early 80's discography, was quirky and expertly played, it almost seemd like the bands music would be better suited for a small hazy club. The Muffins music is basically devoid of all bombast, light and jazzy, with a touch of the avant-garde, and a stark contrast to all the other bands on the bill that weekend. Paul Sears, Tom Scott, Dave Newhouse, and Billy Swann all displayed the virtuosity and melodic sense of an veteran jazz ensemble, and their music pleased the NF faithful with over an hour of classy material. It may have been too much jazz for some, but for many The Muffins were a perfect band for the early afternoon slot on Sunday.
