ConcertsSLAYER & THE HAUNTED-26TH MAY 2010 LEEDS O2 ACADEMY U.K.

Heavy Metal

We've had to wait since October 2009 for this tour to finally reach our shores so, after a couple of re-schedules The World Painted Blood Tour is finally here in all its thrash-tastic glory and here we are on the first night of the European tour.

Waiting a few more hours for the mighty Slayer to grace the stage is made all the more palatable when you have The Haunted to entertain you for a good long support set. Bringing their Scandinavian metal to a packed out Academy all they can do is try to play as loud as possible hoping it will subdue the 'Slayer, Slayer' chants. To a point they were successful as Slayer supports go. Playing a batch of songs from their last album 'Verses' they bring the Gothenburg sound to a mostly appreciative crowd. Boasting ex members of At The Gates and vocalist Peter Dolving from the much underrated Mary Beats Jane they tear through a strong set while Dolving twists and contorts his frame around the stage, great band, tough crowd.

The chants for Slayer are at epic proportions, this crowd has waited and been patient long enough and man do they have some pent up anger and frustration to vent. World Painted Blood is the first number and the intent is clear from the off, Slayer are here to blow our fucking heads off! With Tom Araya unable to head bang due to his recent neck/back surgery, it has in my opinion improved his performance. This is a band certainly on the top of their game, and so they should be after almost thirty years in the business. Ripping through War Ensemble, jihad and Hell Awaits with the ferocity of an air strike it's not long before the security start earning their money with bodies flooding towards the barrier. Taking a little time out to thank the crowd for their patience and turning up, even though this gig was rescheduled twice, Tom then proudly shows off his latest surgery scar.

With Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman trading solos like a venom spitting snake, clearly glad to finally get the tour underway and the thundering tub thumping of Dave Lombardo pulsating through my chest it makes me realize why I love slayer in the live arena so much. This is pure power; this is what being a Metal fan is all about. A group of almost fifty year olds playing to a group of fans almost the same age but who have brought their kids along to experience the brutality of Slayer in 2010 just like they did in 1986. When the iconic riff to Raining Blood pummels through the P.A the touch paper is finally lit and the place goes mental, men, women and children head banging, a mass of hair and limbs shooting through the air like breaking waves. By set closer Angel Of Death the temperature is unbearable but everyone leaves knowing they've possibly witnessed the last Slayer tour, hopefully not time will tell but life will be mighty quiet without them. By their own admission with a Slayer gig you know what you get, brutal but beautiful, powerful yet precise and tonight was no exception.
